As you begin to embark on your wedding journey, we thought we’d have a chat about something that we think truly transforms wedding photos – natural light. It’s not just a source of brightness; it’s the secret ingredient that brings that ethereal quality to your wedding gallery.
So, what is natural light in photography? Well it really just refers to the sun’s light! This light really brings out the best in your photos, creating a mood and atmosphere that’s hard to replicate with artificial lighting. Natural light adds that lovely soft, romantic feel to images, gives depth to your photos, and helps highlight those subtle yet beautiful details of your special day.
One of the biggest tips we can give you: plan your wedding timeline with natural light in mind. For instance, the golden hour – that warm, dreamy time just before sunset – is perfect for romantic couple portraits. This is also why we like to split up couples portraits into 2-3 intervals of 10 minutes or so. This allows us to capture you both during different times of the day which can have such a big impact on the mood and atmosphere in your photos. Have a chat with your photographer to figure out the best times for outdoor shots so that you’ll glowing in the best light possible.
Your venue can also make a HUGE impact on the quality of light in your wedding photos! When picking your venue, think about the light. Those with plenty of windows or outdoor spaces are fantastic for harnessing natural light. We always recommend visiting the venue with your photographer to scout the best spots for photos. Trust us, it honestly makes a world of difference!
Now, we can’t control the weather, but we can certainly prepare for it! On overcast days, natural light is softer and more diffused – it’s actually great for photos. We’re often met with surprised looks from our couples when we tell them how much we appreciate cloudy, grey weddings! But for those ‘just in case’ scenarios (storm ‘Barbara,’ ‘Richard’ or whatever comes next!) ensure your venue has spots that still benefit from natural light, even indoors.
Whether you’re going for a modern, clean look or a more traditional theme, natural light always plays well with all styles. It enhances the ambiance, complements the decor, and adds that ‘wow’ factor to your overall wedding aesthetic. It’s amazing how well light can set the tone for your wedding visuals.
Natural light isn’t just about illumination; it’s about setting the mood and scene for your unforgettable wedding moments. It’s an element that, when used thoughtfully, can really elevate your wedding photos, taking them from ‘nice’ to breathtaking. As you plan your big day and choose your venue, always keep in mind the importance of natural light – it really does make all the difference.
